Midcoast School Of Music offers personalized lesson plans and one-on-one instruction with some of the finest musicians in New England, focusing on mechanics, theory, and performance. Mike started gigging regularly in college while earning his BA in English at the Unversity of Maine. After graduating he continued to gig extensively and study music privately with many area professionals and educators of note.
His experience has ranged from trio and small combo work in clubs as well as playing with several of the area’s bands over the past 15 years, including Retrospecticus, a Portland-based function band featuring several other MCSM instructors.
Nicholas Caine Rausch
Nick has been playing the guitar for over 20 years and teaching since 2003. He has studied guitar at the University of Southern Maine and holds a Bachelors degree in Music Performance with a concentration in Jazz Studies, having graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Nick has also completed intensive guitar repair training with luthier Ivon Schmukler of the Leeds Guitar Building School. He enjoys sharing his knowledge of this subject with his students, and takes pride in having guided many of his students from complete beginner status to accomplished players. In addition to private instruction, Nick has taught in classroom and clinic settings to students of various ages. Nick also enjoys coaching bands and ensembles in styles that span the musical spectrum.
Along with being a member of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), Nicholas is also an active member of numerous honor societies.
Nick teaches and performs primarily in the Portland area.
Ethan has been playing guitar for close to 12 years and began teaching when he was 16 years old. He has founded multiple original bands over the years as well as participating in High School Jazz band, pit band for “High School Musical” and “Change”. He graduated from Yarmouth High School with a music award for his contribution to the musical community in Yarmouth.
He graduated with a Bachelors degree in Philosophy and a music minor from the University of Southern Maine. Recently he has been focusing on songwriting, using theory and philosophy as methods to enhance musical composition. Over the years Ethan has frequented the genres of rock, blues, jazz, funk, soul, metal and flamenco, however his interests extend as far as the music of Southern India as well as the compositions of Mozart, Bach and Debussy, to name a few.
Ethan’s primary focus when it comes to music is playing with others, both in educational as well as collaborative settings. He finds great joy in sharing his love of music with others, as a means for enjoyment, education and healing.
