Jason St. Pierre
Jason St. Pierre began playing professionally at the age of fifteen. He attended The New School for Social Research in New York City, and finished his education at Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusetts, both on scholarship. During his twenty five years as a musician “paying his dues”, Jason has gigged with many of the jazz greats of our time including Jimmy Cobb, Lee Konitz and Benny Carter. He also spent three months touring with the well known rock band Blues Traveler.
Jason began his studies under local musicians and educators Donald Doane, Tony Boffa and Joe LaFlamme, and while living away from
Portland continued his concentrations under jazz saxophonists George Garzone, Jimmy Mosher, David Liebman and Charles Davis.
It is with these musicians’ guidance and expertise that Jason has been able to create his personal teaching style. It is this unique method
that he offers to students who are sincerely interested in learning harmonies and theories associated with a more disciplined music. Emphasis is placed on complete facility of the instrument for versatility, with a focus on an awareness for improvisation in jazz
and blues.
The primary goal for any musician should be to have fun and ultimately share your musicianship with others. Each student that studies with Jason will be tracked for group and ensemble playing available at the school.
Stephen Perry
Steve is a regular player on the Portland music scene with two full time groups: Stereocom and El Grande, several student ensembles, and freelance work on saxophone and congas. Before moving back to the Portland area to further his education, he was a fixture on the jazz and salsa circuit in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas. His interests in music vary as much as his playing experience: jazz, rock, fusion, soul, Afro-Cuban, funk, hip-hop, blues and contemporary music…He believes that being well versed in a number of styles allows the player to fuse different worlds together to create an interesting and personal sound.
Taking lessons can mean a lot of different things to people, so it is important for a teacher to understand what each student is hoping to gain from their studies. Steve’s approach is to help you successfully establish a strong base of fundamental knowledge while working toward your individual goals as a player. All the basics of music theory, tone production, fundamental technique, reading, and beginning to build a repertoire will be covered. Developing good practice habits are an often-neglected area with lessons, as is getting ready for group playing; these are two topics that Steve feels are important to address with everyone. There isn’t a single musician out there who hasn’t struggled with how to accomplish the most during their practice time.
Steve didn’t start exploring the vast world of music until a later age than most of his peers, but he has been making up for lost time by taking lessons with some of the top players in the area. He is currently studying with acclaimed local saxophonist and educator David Wells, and is a performance major in the Jazz and Contemporary Music program at The University of Maine in Augusta. He understands as well as anyone that everybody has to start somewhere, so students of all ages are welcome.
