Tom Zicarelli
Tom is a performer, composer, and teacher. You’re likely to hear him play piano, soprano sax, tenor sax, melodica, harmonica, and slide guitar – occasionally playing two saxophones at once. He’s in demand as a sideman because of his ability to listen and add excitement to the music. As a leader, he’s an innovator who brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds and encourages them to play from their hearts. As a composer he’s written and recorded hundreds of pieces in a variety of styles. Talking about his composition “Slow Dance At The Asylum”, Russ Gershon of the Either Orchestra said, “The track is destined to become a jazz classic.”
Tom performs throughout New England — a veteran of the Boston jazz scene for over 25 years. His latest band — featuring singer Melissa Kassel, bassist Bruno Råberg, and trumpeter Phil Grenadier — has received excellent reviews and regularly draws enthusiastic crowds at the Lily Pad in Cambridge. Since 2004 Tom has been a member of the Denny Breau Trio. He produced the “Live at the Outlook” CD which exemplifies their eclectic brand of roots based folk and improvisation.
Recently Tom recorded and produced over 70 songs of original jazz quartet music with drummer Nat Mugavero, bassist John Funkhouser, and trumpeter Phil Grenadier. In 2010 he launched his international acting debut performing with the Star Maya circus at Festival Atitlan in Guatemala. This summer he started two new projects: a collaboration with poet DA Boucher in “The Alien Chronicles”, and the band Zigzag & Friends which features live multi tracked saxophone and African percussion.
Tom worked as a weather observer on Mount Washington. He directed the jazz band and developed a media production lab at Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine — where he lives with his wife Rebecca and sons Joseph and Danny. He also designs innovative computer applications including a program to generate music from stock market data and a system that makes your car sound like a spaceship.
