Stevie Wonder is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and political activist. He signed with Motown Records at the age of eleven, and remains with that label today. He has recorded more than thirty U.S. top ten hit records, and received twenty-two Grammy Awards—the highest number ever awarded to a solo artist. He was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2009, an honor he said he valued just as much as any award he had received for his music. Although Stevie Wonder has been blind since shortly after birth, he is more of a true visionary than most of us could ever hope to be.
The Midcoast School of Music is proud to offer an ensemble class devoted to the music of this genuine legend and musical pioneer.
Stevie Wonder’s “classic period” is generally thought to include such groundbreaking albums as “Music of My Mind”, “Talking Book”, Innervisions”, “Fulfillingness’ First Finale”, and “Songs in the Key of Life”. A few of the major hits emanating from these records include: “Superstition” (which contains one of the most distinctive and famous examples of the sound of the clavinet keyboard), “You Are the Sunshine of My Life”, “Living for the City”, “Higher Ground”, “Golden Lady” , “He Misstra Know It All”, “I Wish”, “Sir Duke”, and “As”.
He has continued to record and perform music that has a profound effect on audiences throughout the world, and across generational lines. In 2006 he performed on “American Idol” and at the Super Bowl; in 2008 he performed at the Democratic National Convention. In 2009 he received the Library of Congress’s Gershwin Prize, and performed at Michael Jackson’s Memorial Service, while 2010 saw him actively involved in the Hope for Haiti Global Benefit following that island’s catastrophic earthquake.
Join the Midcoast School of Music’s “Stevie Wonder Ensemble” as we honor the life and music of this incredible artist and humanitarian.
