Bob Marley “Legend” Ensemble

The Midcoast School of Music is proud to announce an ensemble class honoring the pioneer of reggae music, Bob Marley.

Bob Marley was a Jamaican singer-songwriter most noted for his work with the ska, reggae, and rock band “Bob Marley and the Wailers” (1963-1981). He remains the most widely known performer of reggae music and is credited with gaining recognition for Jamaican music throughout the world.  His music was heavily influenced by social issues, as well as his Rastafarian faith. Marley’s best known hits include:  “I Shot the Sheriff”, “No Woman No Cry”, “Jamming”, “Redemption Song”, and “One Love”.

In December of 1976, Marley, his wife, and his manager were all victims of a politically motivated shooting.  After recovering, Marley left Jamaica for a two year self-imposed exile in England.  While there, he wrote and recorded some of his most important work, including the album “Exodus” which stayed on the British charts for 56 consecutive weeks.  He returned to Jamaica and released “Survival”, a defiant and politically charged album which highlighted his opposition to South African apartheid.  His final album, “Uprising” (1980) was his most spiritual work, featuring “Redemption Song” and “Forever Loving Jah”.

Bob Marley died from malignant melanoma on May 11, 1981 at the age of 36. Join us in discovering the timeless power and rhythms of Bob Marley’s music.
